Pigmentation

There are many causes of hyperpigmentation (dyschromias) and uneven skin tone as well as different depths of damage to the skin. These types of changes in the skin occur when melanocytes are either destroyed, resulting in hypopigmentation, or over-stimulated, resulting in hyperpigmentation.

Types of Pigment Changes Include:

Hyperpigmentation – darkened pigment

Hypopigmentation – no melanin (lightening) Pigmentation products are not used on this type of skin.

Demarcation – uneven pigmentation from procedures, picking or scratching.

Melasma – more dense larger patches

Three Types of Hyperpigmentation:

Epidermal – Surface is light brown and not quite as dense

Dermal – Skin is deep brown, ashen-gray and appears more solid

Mixture – Both levels are usually dark brown

Causes of Hyperpigmentation May Include

PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
Birth Control Pills
Estrogen (HRT)
Pregnancy (Melasma)
Long-Term Sun Exposure
Acne
Razor Bumps
Severe Sunburn
Regular exposure to the sun
Eczema
Chemical Irritations
Electrolysis
Rashes
Abrasive Scrubs
Certain Prescription Medications
Chicken Pox
Picking
Scratching
Insect Bites
Trauma to Skin
Surgical Procedures
Perfumes Sprayed on Sun-Exposed Areas

Two main factors that affect hyperpigmentation are the sun and heat! So, wear an SPF during the day and stay COOL!

Beware of overuse of products that contain hydroquinone. This ingredient is in many over-the-counter lightening products and has many controversies associated with it. Your skin is very smart and may develop resistance, or immunity and can even become darker with continued use of hydroquinone.

One thing to keep in mind with most pigmentation is our melanocytes are there for protection of the cell initially. We need this in order to help fight against the impact of UV rays. However, after that protection process has taken place, you are now left with underlying damage, and we see this in the form of pigmentation.

Professional Treatments in conjunction with a home regiment are a great way to treat.

RA Pigmentation Solutions Peel (done here at Skin ‘n Tonic) is a progressive-plus to mid-depth peel designed to begin cellular turnover, strengthen skin and reduce pigmentation. With just the right balance of TCA, sake and potent melanin suppressors, skin will be left toned and refined for a luminous complexion. A series of these peels is performed after your initial consultation with Kerian.

In addition, Pigmentation Solutions also offers a Corrective Facial (you can perform at home or some in to have this done professionally) to lighten and brighten skin tone, reduce inflammation, and protect from free radical damage. With our pigment-reduction enzyme, skin is treated to a unique blend of brightening nutrients. The rich, nourishing support of grape seed extract and milk protein support the skin’s balance while providing much needed antioxidants and hydration.
